A couple is being urged to buy baby mattress covers to protect themselves and their children from the baby powder used in the country’s popular baby powder, according to a new report.
“Baby powder, a chemical often used in child-proofing and other consumer products, has been blamed for the recent rash of respiratory illness cases across the United States,” the Wall Street Journal reported.
“Some researchers say the risk is growing because people who use it in their homes are exposing their children to a chemical known as formaldehyde.”
It is unclear what formaldehyde is, but the chemical is known to cause lung cancer and is known as a known carcinogen.
According to the Journal, the company that made the covers also makes baby shampoo and conditioner, and it is unclear if the company will change its policies for the new products.
“It’s unfortunate to see people being exposed to a potentially deadly chemical, but we need to keep in mind that the chemicals used to manufacture these products are not completely harmless,” the company said in a statement to the WSJ.
“The products have not been proven safe in adults and we will continue to monitor the situation.”
The Wall Street Review also reports that baby wipes and baby pads are also causing the respiratory problems.
“While it’s difficult to tell for sure, parents should be aware of the risks of these products,” the study authors said.
“If you’re not comfortable wearing them, you can also avoid these products by washing them well before using them.”
The report was compiled from interviews with parents, doctors, public health experts, researchers, and consumers.
